The interview begins with a discussion of impeachment procedures of South Houston City Council members. Mr. Romero talks about the politics involved with his own impeachment hearing and its outcome. He discusses his early interest in politics while a student in high school, where we was an active participant in school governance and social organizations. He gives details regarding his election to the South Houston, Texas, city council at age 24 while he was a second year law student at the University of Houston Law Center, and he gives details about his service as a council member. Mr. Romero discusses political campaigning at some length, and explains the city management of South Houston. He also describes his activities as Mayor of South Houston to promote cooperative economic opportunities with surrounding communities that will benefit the citizens of the city. He describes the city of South Houston and summarizes its early history. Mr. Romero briefly discusses his participation in the Mickey Leland Internship Program in Washington, D.C. in 1992, and credits that experience with inspiring him to select politics as a vocation. He provides information about his family genealogy and history. Mr. Romero expresses his views on the importance of education to the Mexican American community, which he sees as the most pressing issue facing Mexican Americans.
